We recently visited Goldstream RV to go behind the scenes and see how one of Australia’s truly Australian made caravan manufacturers designs, builds, and assembles their vans.
In this blog, we walk through the factory to give you an honest look at the quality, people, and processes behind Australian made caravans. We also check in on our 19-year-old Goldstream caravan, which has been touring Australia for nearly two decades, and discuss why Australian manufacturing, longevity, and support matter when you’re travelling remote and relying on your gear.

First Impressions: Seeing Australian Craftsmanship in Action
Walking into the Goldstream RV factory, it’s immediately clear how much care goes into every caravan. Skilled people, quality materials, and precision processes come together to produce vans built for life on the road.
Our old 2006 Goldstream caravan was on site, and seeing it again reminded us why supporting local manufacturing matters. Nearly two decades of adventures later, it’s still performing well thanks to careful design and robust construction.

The Heart of a Goldstream Caravan: Chassis and Design
Every caravan starts with a strong foundation. Goldstream builds their chassis locally using Australian steel, welded and hot-dip galvanised to resist corrosion. Each chassis is tailored to the model, ensuring long-lasting durability for off-road and remote travel.
The design team uses CAD drawings and 3D models to plan everything from cabinet placement to weight distribution, making sure every element works together before production even starts.
Precision-Cut Furniture and Interiors
Furniture is digitally designed, CNC-cut, then assembled by hand. Goldstream’s freestanding cabinetry adds structural integrity, which is especially important for rough tracks.
Inside the factory, the assembly line shows how walls, floors, and interiors come together:
Honeycomb composite floors are installed first
Furniture is secured
Wiring looms, plumbing, and electrical systems are fitted and tested
Walls and roofs are made from pre-cut composite panels, carefully bolted into place. Slight roof curvature allows water to run off, and the Tufflon coating protects against stone chips, dust, and scratches.
Upholstery and Finishing Touches
Goldstream has an in-house upholstery department for cushions, curtains, and storage pockets. This ensures every van has consistent quality and attention to detail.
When finished, the vans showcase functional and comfortable interiors: club lounges, ensuites, and smart storage solutions that are ready for life on the road.
Why Australian Manufacturing Matters
Choosing an Australian made caravan has benefits you notice when travelling remote:
Faster support and access to parts
Skilled people familiar with local conditions
Proven durability for off-road and long-term travel
Peace of mind knowing your van is built to last
Final Thoughts: A Factory Tour Worth Experiencing
The Goldstream factory tour gave us an honest look at what goes into building an Australian made caravan. Skilled craftsmanship, high-quality materials, and tested processes are all part of the equation.
For anyone investing in a caravan for serious touring, seeing the care and effort put into Goldstream vans highlights why Australian manufacturing, longevity, and support truly matter.
